Our team

We are a collaborative group of researchers motivated by our interest in quantitative science and our desire to improve public health, both locally and globally. Our expertise span applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, epidemiology, ecology, population genetics, genomics and molecular biology. Many of the projects we work on have a strong social dimension and we maintain an active interest in the ethical, social, cultural and regulatory aspects of our work.

Prospective postdocs

We invite applications from highly motivated postdoctoral candidates with relevant experience in applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, epidemiology, ecology, population genetics and related fields. For consideration, please send the following to John Marshall (john.marshall@berkeley.edu):
  • Your CV, including a list of publications and the names and email addresses of three potential referees,
  • PDFs of your two most significant publications of manuscripts to date,
  • A cover letter describing your research interests and motivations for joining our lab.
See our current postdoctoral job advertisement here.

Prospective graduate students

We welcome graduate students from the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School of Public Health, the Energy and Resources Group, the Biophysics Graduate Group, and the Center for Computational Biology. Prospective graduate students should apply for admission through one of these programs. The latter two programs allow students to rotate through multiple labs in their first year, providing a diversity of research experiences before selecting a lab. For more information about these graduate programs and for details on how to apply, please visit the admission sites for the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the Energy and Resources Group, the Biophysics Graduate Group, and the Center for Computational Biology.

Prospective undergraduate students

We invite undergraduate students to inquire about enrolling in research units (PB HLTH 199: Supervised Independent Study and Research, 1-4 units) to gain valuable research experience in an exciting and collaborative lab setting while fulfilling degree requirements. We welcome students from any school or department at UC Berkeley; but are particularly interested in those from the School of Public Health and the Departments of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Integrative Biology, Environmental Science Policy & Management, and Molecular & Cell Biology. Students are expected to complete 3 hours of work per unit enrolled. Contact John Marshall (john.marshall@berkeley.edu) for more information.
